Subterranean Press proudly presents a major new collection by one of the brightest stars in the literary firmament. Catherynne M. Valente, the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and other acclaimed novels, now brings readers a treasure trove of stories and poems in The Bread We Eat in Dreams.
In the Locus Award-winning novelette 'White Lines on a Green Field,' an old story plays out against a high school backdrop as Coyote is quarterback and king for a season. A girl named Mallow embarks on an adventure of memorable and magical politicks in 'The Girl Who Ruled Fairyland--For a Little While.' The award-winning, tour de force novella 'Silently and Very Fast' is an ancient epic set in a far-flung future, the intimate autobiography of an evolving A.I. And in the title story, the history of a New England town and that of an outcast demon are irrevocably linked.
The twenty-six pieces collected here explore an extraordinary breadth of styles and genres, as Valente presents readers with something fresh and evocative on every page. From noir to Native American myth, from folklore to the final frontier, each tale showcases Valente's eloquence and originality.

As always, I love Catherynne Valente's prose and poetry. This is the first collection of hers that I have read. Previously I have read the Fairyland series, the Night Garden series and Palimpsest. I love the whimsical, ethereal quality of her writing as well as the dark humor that can underly many of her pieces. Also, if you spend a day watching cooking shows while reading this book, you will end up having some seriously weird yet awesome dreams that night. I am always a sucker for any book that follows me into my dreams.Product details

The Bread We Eat in Dreams eBook Catherynne M Valente Kathleen Jennings Reviews
couldn't stop reading. What an incredible collection of tales! Each is its own world, complete and discrete. I've never been so thoroughly transported so quickly! I can never get over how Cat writes stories that are so familiar yet entirely new. I've never predicted the way they end - what a gift to a seasoned reader!
Catherynne M. Valente has a wonderful way with words. The imagery is lush and she takes you to places you never knew existed.
Just a warning...reading her stories is like eating cheescake...they're very rich and best when savored slowly, a little bit at a time.
Enjoy!!!!
Unique, thought provoking, beautiful, gritty, engrossing poetry stories. I will read again because it's that good. Chi Miigwetch Catherynne M. Valentine.
This is the best fiction I have read in along time, loved all but one or two of the stories. Silently and Very Fast is the story that got me into Valente, along with Fade To White, but my favorite story here was a tie between The Bread We Eat in Dreams and The Girl Who Ruled Fairyland for A Little While.
Stories range from fun examination of humane characters to rebelling of folk tales from a new POV, from exquisite observation of human nature to interaction between wait-for-it computer subroutines. This is poetry, a book about love, a book about sadness that is reality. This is a must read.
Ms. Valente has a particular voice on the page when it comes to Fantasy/Fiction and this is a solid collection of quirky material with a range broad enough to engage most readers. The poetry included did little for me but was of interest in that it allowed another perspective on the Author. Readers who pick up this collection with a background in classical literature will appreciate the richness of the contents in terms of allusions and there are many.Perhaps the best example would be the title story which can be read as a "tip-of-the-hat" to The Crucible. "In the future when all's well" was the weakest link and could have been written by anyone but certainly seemed beneath the abilities of the Author.
Readers who are looking for a new favorite Author might do better to start with Ms. Valente's Orphan's Tales to get a better sense of her particular style of somewhat circular/spiral story-telling. Those looking for a one-off entertaining read could very well start here.
I recently became a fan of Catherynne Valente's work and having finished most of her novels, I've turned to her short works. I love her work because of descriptions and the dreamlike qualities of her stories. The almost synesthetic nature of everything. And these stories do not dissapoint. If anything the short format allows more freedom to reach out than a novel. If I had to pick a theme, Stories of loss, stories of hope. There is a lot of resetting of myths and fairytales in settings we're more familiar with.
